Chattanooga, TN- The Tennessee Smokies had no answer for Chattanooga pitchers and were downed on Monday night at AT&T Park by the score of 2-1 to the Lookouts. The loss drops the Smokies to 22-16 and the Lookouts improve to 20-18 on the season.
The Lookouts struck first off of LHP Chris Rusin (1-1) in the bottom of the second when Alfredo Silverio led off the inning with a single to second base. Brian Cavazos-Galvez grounded into a force play to Marwin Gonzalez to reach base and later advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jaime Pedroza. Wilberto Ortiz then singled to right field to plate Cavazos-Galvez, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Lookouts.
After three scoreless innings, the Lookouts added another run to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott Van Slyke led off the inning with a double to left field and later advanced to third base on a one out single to left field by Cavazos-Galvez. Pedroza reached on a fielder's choice as Van Slyke was thrown out at the plate, advancing Cavazos-Galvez to second base. With Ortiz batting, Cavazos-Galvez attempted to steal third base and after a throwing error on the play by Blake Lalli, Cavazos-Galvez scored making the score 2-0.
The Smokies finally got on the board in the top of the eighth against RHP Steven Ames when Jae-Hoon Ha doubled to left field to lead off the inning. On the next at-bat, Ryan Flaherty singled home Ha on a groundball to right field, cutting the Chattanooga lead to 2-1.
Rusin left the game after six innings pitched, giving up two runs on four hits. Lookouts RHP Nathan Eovaldi lasted six innings as well, allowing only two hits and zero runs. The loss drops Rusin to 1-1 on the season and with the win, Eovaldi increases his record to 3-1 on the year.
