MOBILE, Ala. - Wes Roemer nearly became the first BayBears pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter as he carried his bid into the eighth inning of the BayBears' 6-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

At one point, Roemer retired 14 consecutive hitters. That streak ended with a one-out walk to Cody Puckett in the seventh, but the no-hitter carried forward. Jose Castro started the eighth frame by getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the ballgame. He scored on a double off the right-field wall by former BayBear James Skelton, who laced a 2-2 pitch over the head of Marc Krauss.

Skelton's double not only ended Roemer's no-hitter, but it also tied the game at 1-1. After Kyle Day lined out to deep right-center, Roemer was lifted in favor of Bryan Shaw (3-1), who fanned Quintin Berry swinging to end the frame.

In the bottom of the eighth, the BayBears (21-15) broke the tie with a five-run inning against reliever Lee Tabor (0-2). A.J. Pollock started the rally by shooting a double to the right-center field alley. He scored the go-ahead run on a bloop base hit by Ryan Wheeler.

After Marc Krauss walked to load the bases, Ed Easley cranked a double to right-center, unloading the bags to bring home Paul Goldschmidt, Wheeler and Krauss. Easley touched the dish after a two-base hit by Jake Elmore to put the BayBears up by five.

The BayBears battle the Mudcats in game four of their five-game set on Tuesday night at 7:05. Right-hander Charles Brewer (1-1) starts for the BayBears against fellow righty James Avery (3-4). It's Guaranteed Win Night at "The Hank" as fans will receive a free box seat to the next Tuesday home game if the BayBears lose.
