
Kelley to Make Rehab Appearance Tonight

JACKSON, TENN. (May 16, 2011 - The Seattle Mariners announced today that RHP Shawn Kelley will begin a rehab assignment with the Jackson Generals tonight. Kelley will wear #33 for the Generals and is scheduled to pitch the first inning of tonight's game against the Huntsville Stars. Kelley appeared in 22 games for Seattle last season before being placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation on June 25. He had season ending surgery. He was 3-1, with a 3.96 ERA (11 ER, 25.0 IP) in 2010, and held opponents scoreless in 15 of 22 appearances.
Kelley, 27 has made 63 MLB appearances for Seattle (8-5, 4.31 ERA, 71IP) in 2009 and 2010. He pitched for West Tenn in 2008, making 29 appearances and saving 9 games. Shawn resides during the off-season in Chattanooga with wife, Kelsey, and son Parker. Kelley was drafted by the Mariners in the 13th round of the 2007 draft and graduated from Ballard (KY) High School in June, 2002. He went on to graduate from Austin Peay State University in June, 2007 and was named 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Shawn made only 61 minor league appearances before MLB debut in 2009. His 41 appearances in 2009 ranked T10th all-time among Mariners rookie relievers. Kelley made Major League debut April 10 at Oakland with scoreless inning, striking out first batter faced (M. Ellis). His last appearance in a game was on 6/15/10 at St. Louis. He allowed one run in one inning of relief and gave up homer to Albert Pujols.
Kelly's rehab will not count towards the Generals 24-man roster.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - The Jackson Generals won their third straight Sunday afternoon, routing the Huntsville Stars, 15-4. Jackson matched a season high by scoring 15 runs and set season bests with seven doubles and eight extra base hits. The Generals (20-15) kept pace with the first place Smokies, remaining a game back, in second place in the north division. Jake Shaffer, Kuo Hui Lo and Eddy Martinez-Esteve registered three-hit games Sunday. Shaffer scored two runs and had an RBI, Lo doubled twice, scored twice and drove in three runs, while Martinez-Esteve doubled, scored three runs and plated one. Martinez-Esteve has six hits in the first two games against Huntsville. Kyle Seager had two hits, including his fourth homerun, and four RBI's. Brandon Bantz drove in three runs and had two hits. Jarrett Grube (3-0) won his second straight start and third in four outings. Grube gave up two earned runs on four hits, in six innings. Grube struck out five and walked two. Edward Paredes, Brian Moran and Bobby LaFromboise, the three lefty relievers for Jackson tossed three perfect innings, to finish the game.
AT A GLANCE: Eddy Martinez-Esteve is 6-for-8 (.750) in the current series, with a double, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, Scott Savastano currently has a 5-game hit streak, batting .368 (7x19) with 6 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Generals Pitching is second in the Southern League, with a 3.55 team ERA. Erasmo Ramirez has walked just 2 batters in 45.1 innings. That is a 0.40 BB/9IP ratio that leads the Southern League. The next closest is CHA P Michael Antonini, who has a 0.89 BB/9IP ratio. Ramirez had a streak of 37.1 straight innings without a walk end Saturday night. Ramirez is 2-0, with a 0.79 ERA at Pringles Park this season. Kyle Seager has hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games, batting .353 (30x85) with 15 runs scored, 11 doubles, 3 home runs and 18 RBI.

Kelley was placed on the 15-Day DL on June 16, 2010 and missed the remainder of the season. Had season-ending surgery for right elbow inflammation. Kelley has made 63 MLB appearances for Seattle (8-5, 4.31 ERA, 71IP) in 2009 and 2010. He pitched for West Tenn in 2008, making 29 apperances and saving 9 games. RHP Andrew Carraway is scheduled to pitch behind Kelley today.
HUNTSVILLE STARTER: RHP Michael Bowman makes his seventh start for the Stars tonight. Bowman was drafted in the 9th round of the 2008 draft. Bowman is 23 years old and was a mid-season Southern League All-Star last season.
A CLUTTERED NORTH: The Generals trail first place Tennessee by just one game and are 1.5 games ahead of Huntsville now for second place. Today's matchup against Huntsville marks only the eighth game Jackson has played against a North Division foe. The Generals are 6-1 (4-1 vs. CHA) against their own division and 14-14 against the South Division of the SL.
