New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Doug Mathis tossed a two-hitter for seven innings, and Bryan Petersen had four hits, including a home run, to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs to a 9-0 win over the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night.

Mathis (4-7) did not allow a hit until a one-out single by Brad Nelson in the fourth inning, then yielded a two-out double to Ty Wright in the sixth. Mathis struck out seven batters, one shy of his season high, and struck out the side in the fifth to earn his first win at Zephyr Field since May 26.

Mathis helped his own cause at the plate, reaching base three times, including an RBI single on an 11-pitch at-bat against Iowa starter Jake Arrieta in the second inning to give New Orleans a 2-0 lead.

The Z's extended the lead to 3-0 in the third. Petersen singled with one out and Jordan Brown followed with a double off the center field wall, but Petersen was thrown out at the plate on the relay. However, Arrieta unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Brown to score from third.

A key error by former Zephyr Donnie Murphy opened the door to a big four-run fourth inning rally, when the Zephyrs batted around. With Nick Green at second with two outs, Mathis hit a two-hopper to short that Murphy misplayed, allowing Green to score.

Kevin Mattison then laced a triple, his sixth of the season, into the right field corner to score Mathis, and Velazquez grounded a single through the hole at short to score the third run of the frame. Petersen ripped a single to left, and Arrieta was chased from the game a batter later on Brown's second hit of the night.

Arrieta (0-1) was charged with seven runs - three earned - and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Petersen belted a two-run homer to right-center field in the sixth off Jeff Antigua, and added an eighth-inning single to complete his second four-hit game of the season, both of which have come against Iowa. The Z's outfielder collected a career-high five hits in Des Moines on June 3.

New Orleans out-hit Iowa 15-3, as each player in the Zephyrs' starting lineup collected at least one hit.

James Leverton and Jonathan Albaladejo blanked the I-Cubs over the final two innings to complete the Zephyrs' seventh shutout of the season.

The Z's finish the seven-game homestand with the series finale against Iowa on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
