Washington Spirit News Release
BOYDS, Md. - Washington Spirit players Robyn Gayle and Diana Matheson have been selected to play for the Canada Women's National Team in the upcoming international friendly against Germany on June 19 at Benteler Arena in Paderborn, Germany (18.00 local kick-off).
The match will be the first between Germany and Canada since group play of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, where Germany won 2-1 in front of a home crowd of more than 70,000. Matheson started the match and came within inches of scoring an equalizer in the final minutes, sending a shot just wide of the post.
Gayle earned her 72nd senior national team cap on June 2 when she entered the match as a 71st minute substitute on the Canadian back line in a 3-0 loss to the U.S. Matheson started and played the full match at midfield for the Canadians, who were unable to produce a shot on goal against a U.S. defense led by Spirit teammate Ali Krieger. The match was Matheson's 150th cap for Canada's senior national team.
As part of NWSL rules, the Spirit will be permitted to add up to three amateur players to their June 15 game against Western NY Flash, two to replace Gayle and Matheson, and one to replace defender Ali Krieger, who was called up last week to the U.S. team for a pair of domestic friendlies against South Korea.
