Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Regina, SK - Denton Mateychuk has etched his name in Moose Jaw Warriors' history.

The Warriors captain registered his 213th career point on Sunday afternoon, setting a new Warriors' record for points by defenceman.

Mateychuk passes Nathan Paetsch, who had held the record since 2003.

Paetsch, who is now an assistant coach with the Rochester Americans, congratulated Mateychuk on accomplishing the feat.

"Denton, I just wanted to say congratulations, you're a heck of a player, I had the privilege to watch you last season in the playoffs and it's just special to see the momentum you've created," Paetsch said.

"You're a true captain and a leader on the ice and just a Warrior through-and-through and that award means a lot to me and the City of Moose Jaw and I'm just happy to say my name in the same sentence."

Mateychuk accomplishes the feat in 56 fewer games with 213 points, and counting, in 202 Western Hockey League games.

The Columbus Blue Jackets first round pick is having a career-year with 17 goals and 72 points in 51 games this season, which has him fourth in scoring among defenceman in the WHL.

This season's 72 points are the third-most in a single season by a Warriors defenceman in franchise history. He sits four back of Scott Schoneck's single-season record of 76 set in 1998-99.

Mateychuk and the Warriors will finish the regular season next week and then head into the 2024 WHL Playoffs in the final week of March.
