Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Liverpool FC U21s

Sacramento Republic FC host Liverpool Football Club U21s on Saturday, May 21. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PDT at Bonney Field. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the match are included in the 2016 Republic FC season ticket package and may be downloaded and printed via MyAccountManager. Single match tickets to the match are available on Ticketmaster.com.

This will be Republic FC's third friendly match of the season after playing the Colorado Rapids (MLS) on Feb. 13 and the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) on Feb. 20. The match is also the fourth time that Republic FC will play an English Premier League club. Republic FC hosted West Bromwich Albion for two matches in 2014 and then hosted Newcastle United FC and Sunderland AFC in 2015. Republic FC is 1-3-0 all-time in matches against EPL sides, with their only win coming against Sunderland AFC on July 14 in Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle's first match.

Republic FC enter the match after defeating CD Aguiluchos USA 5-0 in their Second Round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday, May 18. Alfonso Motagalvan, Thomas Stewart, Mackenzie Pridham, Carlos Rodriguez and Max Alvarez all scored in the match.

Motagalvan and Rodriguez each scored off a corner kick, something that Republic FC had not done since the USL playoffs in 2014. Republic FC scored three goals against Aguiluchos from set plays, something that had also not been done by the club since the 2014 playoffs.

Republic FC have recorded three straight shutouts in all competitions, this is the third time since Buckle took over as head coach that Republic FC has achieved such a feat. Republic FC has allowed just seven goals in 11 total matches this season.

Liverpool FC U21s come into the match after finishing seventh in the U21 English Premier League table.

U.S. U-20 Men's National Team forward Brooks Lennon joined Liverpool FC U21s in the summer of 2015 from the Real Salt Lake Academy. Lennon scored a goal and added an assist in seven matches for Liverpool FC U21s this season. Lennon scored 31 goals for Real Salt Lake Academy during the 2014-15 season.
