Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - A youth movement powered the Greenville Drive on Wednesday night, with a stellar start from Bryan Mata and a big offensive effort from Lorenzo Cedrola leading the Drive to a 7-1 win at Fluor Field.
The 18-year old Mata (1-0) dazzled in his first start at home, as he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks over six innings with six strikeouts.
Cedrola was a sparkplug atop the Drive (32-20) lineup, as the 19-year old went 3-4 and cracked a three-run homer over the Green Monster in the seventh inning for his second blast of the year.
The Braves (30-23) struck for a run in the second thanks to doubles by Brett Cumberland and Ramon Osuna.
Rome starter Ryan Lawlor (3-1) didn't allow a run over his first five innings, but he ran into trouble in the sixth and coughed up the lead thanks to some deft Drive baserunning.
Cedrola singled with one out, and he later scored all the way from second on a two-out infield single by Ryan Scott. After Scott stole second, Tyler Hill grounded a single into left to give the Drive the lead. Tucker Tubbs then lifted a pop fly single into shallow right, and Hill, running on the pitch, glided all the way home for a third run.
Tyler Spoon plated the Drive's final run of the night with an eighth-inning single that scored Roldani Baldwin, who doubled with two outs.
Cedrola's three hits led the Greenville offense, while Scott and Spoon added two hits apiece.
Lawlor struck out nine Drive hitters in five and two-thirds in defeat. Kurt Hoekstra went 2-4 for Rome.
With the Drive and Braves splitting the four-game series, Greenville's Southern Division lead over Rome remains at one and a half games.
The homestand continues on Thursday night as the Drive welcome the Charleston RiverDogs, a New York Yankees affiliate, to town in the renewal of the Battle of the Palmetto State Rivalry Series presented by Spinx. Drive left-hander Robby Sexton (0-5, 5.12) will throw the first pitch at 7:05 PM, and the RiverDogs will start right-hander Nick Green (3-3, 3.02).
