Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - Behind another scoreless outing on the mound from Logan Boyd, the Greenville Drive defeated the Rome Braves 5-2 on Tuesday night to clinch a split of the day's doubleheader at Fluor Field.

Boyd (7-1) extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 consecutive innings with five frames of work on Tuesday, and he struck out six while allowing just two hits and three walks. With seven victories on the season, Boyd ranks second in the South Atlantic League.

The Drive (31-20) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off Jaret Hellinger (0-1) on an RBI single by Lorenzo Cedrola and a sacrifice fly by Santiago Espinal. A two-run single in the fourth by Nick Sciortino extended the lead to 4-0.

Rome (30-22) got on the board in the sixth when Brett Cumberland smacked a two-run homer to right field, cutting the Drive lead to 4-2, but a Mitchell Gunsolus RBI groundout in the bottom half of the inning tacked on an insurance run.

The first game of the doubleheader saw the Braves score seven times in the top of the seventh to tie the game, and they scored three more times in the ninth inning to shock the Drive by a 10-7 score.

Trailing 7-0 with three outs remaining in the opener, the first four Braves reached base against Mike Shawaryn in the seventh to chase him from the game. Three RBI singles in the frame allowed Rome to cut the score to 7-4, and after a run scored on a wild pitch, Cumberland roped a two-run double off the Green Monster to tie the game.

For the second straight day, the Braves took an extra-inning lead thanks to a solo homer by Justin Ellison, as he deposited a pitch from Algenis Martinez (1-1) over the wall in right-center field. A Drive error later in the frame brought home two more runs, and that made a winner out of Rome reliever Thomas Burrows (3-2).

Shawaryn received a tough-luck no-decision after striking out nine hitters over six innings.

After Tyler Hill's RBI double put the Drive up 1-0 in the first, a four-run third pulled them ahead even further. Isaias Lucena laced a two-run double in the inning, which also included an RBI double by Roldani Baldwin and an RBI triple from Mitchell Gunsolus.

Hill and Lucena added RBI hits in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-0.

Hill posted a monster offensive day on Tuesday, as he reached base in all eight plate appearances.

The series finale begins at 7:05 PM on Wednesday at Fluor Field. The Drive will send right-hander Bryan Mata (0-0, 3.00) to the mound for his first home start, and left-hander Ryan Lawlor (3-0, 4.32) starts for the Braves.
