San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Keury Mella took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in San Jose's 7-2 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. Mella and relievers Christian Jones and Dan Slania combined on a two-hitter as the Giants evened their series with the Ports at a game apiece. San Jose (42-48) built a 7-0 lead after five innings before cruising to the win.
Mella (5-2) matched a career-high with seven innings pitched and allowed only one hit and one run to pick-up the win. The right-hander, who saw his no-hit bid broken up by a solo homer to start the top of the seventh, struck out five and did not issue a walk during his 97-pitch masterpiece.
Brian Ragira (3-for-4, 3 2B) doubled three times while Christian Arroyo (2-for-5, 2 RBI) produced a pair of key two-out, two-run singles to lead the Giants offensively. Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) added two hits and two RBI's and Tyler Horan (1-for-3, HR, RBI) smacked his team-leading eighth home run of the season. San Jose finished the night with 10 hits.
Mella set down Stockton 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings before the Giants broke through against Ports All-Star starter Dylan Covey in the bottom of the third. Horan led off the frame with an opposite field solo homer to left giving San Jose a 1-0 lead. Ragira followed with a double into the left center field gap before moving to third on Jeff Arnold's groundout. Ragira was still at third after Jeff Kobernus grounded out back to the pitcher, but Arroyo then delivered an RBI single into left to make it 2-0. The rally continued when Ryder Jones reached on a Franklin Barreto throwing error at shortstop before Angel Villalona walked to load the bases. Carbonell was up next and he lofted a fly ball double into deep right center plating both Arroyo and Jones for a 4-0 advantage.
San Jose extended their lead to 6-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth against Covey. Horan led off by reaching on an error before Ragira doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Horan then scored when Arnold's grounder to third was thrown away by Matt Chapman for an error. Then with two outs, Ragira came home when Arroyo singled into left.
The Giants completed their scoring for the night with a single run in the bottom of the fifth. Singles from Villalona and Carbonell started the frame before a one-out walk to Horan loaded the bases. Arnold then drew a two-out, nine-pitch walk to bring home Villalona for a 7-0 cushion.
Stockton's only baserunner over the first six innings against Mella came in the top of the fourth when Barreto reached on a throwing error committed by Jones at third base. Mella retired 18 out of the first 19 Ports batters in the contest and sat at 84 pitches thrown through six innings.
With the score still 7-0, Mella's no-hit bid was broken up when Barreto belted the first pitch of the top of the seventh over the fence in left center for a solo homer. The home run was Barreto's 10th of the season. Mella though recovered to quickly set down the next three hitters to end the inning and his night.
Jones (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) needed just seven pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 top of the eighth before Slania (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the ninth inning. B.J. Boyd greeted Slania with a triple to deep right center and scored two batters later on Barreto's sacrifice fly to left. The run trimmed the Giants lead to 7-2, but Slania came back to strikeout the next hitter, Tyler Marincov, to finish the game.
Covey (6-6) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.
