Nuts Explode in Middle Innings, Blaze Fall 8-5
July 17, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The visiting Modesto Nuts scored just one run in seven of their nine offensive innings. But in the 4th and 5th, Modesto plated seven runs on eight hits, and despite a valiant offensive effort from the Bakersfield Blaze, the home team could not overcome the hot-hitting club from the north while falling 8-5 on Thursday night in Bakersfield.
Eddie Campbell (L, 3-5) took the defeat for the Blaze in an up-and-down performance. Campbell, coming off a solid effort against the Rawhide his last time out, blitzed through the first three innings as the Blaze built a 1-0 lead.
In the 4th, though, the wheels came off. A solo homer to begin the inning was followed by a pair of singles, and, later, an RBI grounder and a single plated two runs for a 3-1 Modesto lead.
Bakersfield got one in the home half, but the Nuts pushed well in front in the 5th. A double, a walk, a run-scoring single ended the evening for Campbell, and after a pitching change, a big three-run homer put the Blaze in a 7-2 hole.
On the Modesto side, Konner Wade (W, 4-6) was into and out of trouble most of the evening. A three-error 3rd allowed the Blaze to take a short-lived 1-0 lead, a Rayder Ascanio run-producing hit in the 4th plated another, and Burt Reynolds' infield hit scored a third Blaze run in the 5th.
Reynolds wasn't done, either, as the veteran slugger smacked his fifth homer in the 7th, a two-run shot that cut the Blaze deficit to just 7-5.
But the Nuts scratched a final run across in the 8th off Rafael Pineda, and the Blaze would fall by that margin. Matt Carasiti (S, 7) worked the 9th inning for the save for Modesto.
Also of note in this contest, Justin Seager posted a three-hit night and has five hits in the first two games of the series.
The homestand concludes on a whopper of a Friday. It's Fireworks Night, Do the Math Night, presented by K-12, and Boy Scout Night. Scott DeCecco makes his Blaze debut and Johendi Jiminian goes for the Nuts in a 7:45pm start.
Gates open at 6:45pm, and the broadcast goes live at 7:40pm. Dan Besbris has the call at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio.
