SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Giants starting pitcher Keury Mella (5-2) turned in his best performance of the season on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. His one-hit performance over seven innings, coupled with four errors committed by the Stockton Ports defense, led to a 7-2 loss for Stockton as the Giants evened the series at a game apiece.

San Jose opened the scoring in the third with a leadoff home run hit by Tyler Horan. Brian Ragira followed with a double and wound up at third base with two outs. Christian Arroyo then came up and delivered a two-out RBI single to run the Giants lead to 2-0. After Ryder Jones reached on a throwing error committed by shortstop Franklin Barreto, Angel Villalona walked and Daniel Carbonell delivered a two-run double to right to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Ports starter Dylan Covey (6-6) would be hit up for a pair of unearned runs on the fourth. Horan reached on a Barreto fielding error to open the frame. After Brian Ragira doubled to put runners at second and third, Jeff Arnold reached on a fielding error committed by third baseman Matt Chapman that brought in a run to make it 5-0. Two batters later, after a double-play put a runner at third with two outs, Arroyo delivered his second straight two-out RBI single to make it a 6-0 contest.

Covey suffered the loss after going four innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Meanwhile, Mella retired the first 10 batters in a row before Barreto reached on a throwing error committed by the third baseman Jones with one out in the fourth. Mella would go on to retire his next eight consecutive batters to get him through the sixth without a hit allowed.

San Jose added to its lead in the fifth facing Ports reliever Trevor Bayless. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bayless issued a walk to Arnold that ran the Giants lead to 7-0. It was the only run allowed by Bayless in two innings of relief.

Still in search of their first hit going into the seventh, Barreto led off the frame with a home run to left, his 10th of the season to put the Ports on the board. Mella went on to retire the next three hitters to complete his outing. The right-hander earned the win, going seven innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out five.

After Christian Jones pitched a perfect eighth inning, Dan Slania came in to close out the contest in the ninth. Slania gave up a leadoff triple to B.J. Boyd, who scored two batters later on a Barreto sacrifice fly to left that gave the Ports their second run. Slania would go on to strike out Tyler Marincov to end the ballgame.

Victor Veliz pitched the final two innings for Stockton and retired six of the seven batters he faced while striking out three and allowing just one hit.

The Ports and Giants play the rubber match of their three-game series on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Left-hander Chris Lamb (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start of the season for Stockton after being transferred from Double-A Midland. He'll be opposed by San Jose right-hander Martin Agosta (3-6, 4.91 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
