Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs came away with a 4-3 victory Friday in the first game of their three-game series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Syracuse used a fifth-inning, two-run triple from Jason Martinson to defeat the RailRiders.
Syracuse (7-8) opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, thanks to two run-scoring doubles. After a walk and a passed ball gave Jason Martinson a free pass to second base, he came around to score on Brian Goodwin's double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Isaac Ballou traded places with Goodwin on a double to left, giving the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (8-7) wasted no time in responding after leadoff hitter Ben Gamel led off the third inning with a walk. A single from highly touted prospect Aaron Judge then moved Gamel over to third, before the ensuing batter, Gary Sanchez, drove Gamel in with another single. Despite being in a jam with no outs and two runners on, Syracuse starter Taylor Hill used two strikeouts and a force out to end the threat.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth, when after two quick strikeouts, Sanchez doubled down the left-field line. This brought former Major League All-Star Nick Swisher to the plate, who wasted no time in sending Hill's first-pitch fastball over the right-field fence and into NBT Bank Stadium's Family Fun Park. Hill walked the next two batters before being replaced with recent callup Abel De Los Santos, who got Donovan Solano to ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the frame, Syracuse responded with two runs to take back the lead at 4-3. The inning started with a Trea Turner walk, and quickly turned into a scoring situation after RailRider first baseman Chris Parmelee threw Brendan Ryan's potential double-play ground ball into left field. Turner went to third on the error, while Ryan reached on the fielder's choice. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Chad Green nearly escaped the inning after back-to-back strikeouts, but a Martinson triple to right brought home both Chiefs runners.
The Syracuse bullpen went on to pitch four and one-third scoreless innings to seal the victory. De Los Santos recorded the win in relief in his first Triple-A appearance. Sammy Solis threw two innings after De Los Santos. Trevor Gott replaced him in the ninth and picked up a save, retiring the final three batters after surrendering a pair of singles.
The Chiefs and RailRiders square off again Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium for the second game of this three-game series. First pitch is set for 1:05. Syracuse has scheduled Austin Voth for the start, while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sends Kyle Haynes to the mound.
