Tampa Bay Rays Top Prospect Blake Snell Promoted to Big Leagues

DURHAM, NC - Durham Bulls LHP Blake Snell has been scratched from his scheduled start Friday night in Norfolk, as the reigning Baseball America and USA Today Minor League Player of the Year will start for the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Snell made three starts for Durham this season prior to his promotion, going 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA. The 23-year-old struck out 21 batters over 14 1/3 innings while issuing seven walks. The Shoreline, Wash. native becomes the first Bulls player to be promoted to the major leagues in 2016.

In nine starts with the Bulls in 2015, the 52nd overall pick out of Shoreline H.S. went 6-2 with a 1.83 ERA. Ranked the No. 12 prospect in the game by Baseball America, the southpaw split 2015 between Advanced-A Charlotte, Double-A Montgomery and Durham, combining to go 15-4 with a 1.41 ERA.

Snell will be added to the MLB Taxi Squad today. In addition, OF Mikie Mahtook has been placed on Durham's disabled list, while RHP Chih-Wei Hu has been assigned to Durham from Double-A Montgomery and INF Cameron Seitzer has been assigned to Durham from Extended Spring Training.
