Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Adrian Martinez hit a game-winning two-run home run in the 11th inning to send Sioux City to a 6-4 victory over the RailCats in the series opener on Tuesday night. The RailCats are 30-39 after finishing July with a record of 14-14.

The RailCats led 4-2 with two outs in the ninth inning, when Wally Backman hit an RBI single and Peter Barrows followed with an RBI double off of RailCats closer Chris Allen to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings. In the 10th, David Cooper was robbed of a go-ahead base hit on a diving stop by Explorers' second baseman Mike Murphy. Then in the 11th, following Murphy's single, Martinez crushed the game-winning home run, his first of the season, over the left field wall.

Mike Rohde reached on an error to start the fourth inning. He was on second with two out when Cooper hit an RBI single to center for the first run of the game. Adam Klein followed with a double down the left field line to score Cooper and make it 2-0.

Ray Serrano hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to trim the RailCats lead to 2-1.

Klein's sac fly in the sixth made it 3-1. The Explorers pulled a run back in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Ryan Priddy. Cooper hit a two-out RBI double in the eighth to increase the RailCats lead to 4-2.

Two great defensive plays by the RailCats saved runs in the game: Adam Klein threw out Ray Serrano at home to end the second, and Mike Massaro made a leaping grab on the warning track in right to take away at least one RBI from Kris Sanchez in the fifth.

RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock gave up two runs in six innings for a no-decision. Explorers starter Ty Marotz also took a no-decision, allowing four runs, one earned, in 7 2/3 innings. Chris Bodishbaugh (6-2) pitched three scoreless innings for the win while Allen (4-5) surrendered four runs for the loss.

The middle game of the three-game set will be on Wednesday at 7:05. Jon Gulbransen (1-1, 3.38) will take the ball for Gary.
