Explorers win 6-4

Sioux City-----Adrian Martinez walk-off two-run home run in the 11th inning gave the Explorers a 6-4 win over Gary here Tuesday. It was Martinez's first home run of the season and it came off losing pitcher Chris Allen. With one out in the 11th inning, Mike Murphy singled, his second hit of the game and Martinez, who was used as a pinch hitter in the ninth, blasted an Allen pitch over the left field fence to give the Explorers their fifth extra inning win in six tries this season. Gary had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning scoring two un-earned runs off Explorers starter Ty Marotz. The Explorers cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Ray Serrano, his eighth of the year. Gary added another un-earned run in the sixth inning as two errors were costly for Sioux City and Gary led 3-1. The Explorers would add a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. Again, Gary would add another run in the eighth inning to make it a 4-2 lead. However, in the ninth with one out, Murphy single and with two outs Wally Backman, Jr singled to drive home Martinez who was safe at first base on a fielders choice. That cut the lead to 4-3. Then Peter Barrows doubled into the left field corner to score Backman with the tying run. The Explorers would then win the contest in the bottom of the 11th inning on the walk-off home run by Martinez. Chris Bodishbaugh, in relief picked up the victory, his sixth of the season. In the month of July the Explorers won 13 games and Bodishbaugh was responsible for 12 of those wins with six wins and six saves in the month. The Explorers and Gary will meet in the second game of the three-game Wednesday at Lewis and Clark Park with game time 7:05.
