Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SALEM, Va. - Jonathan Martinez, Michael Wagner and Ryan McNeil teamed to shut out the Salem Red Sox 1-0 Wednesday, salvaging the series for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at LewisGale Field.

Martinez (4-5) scattered three hits in six shutout innings, fanning four against two walks. The right-hander has allowed just four runs, all earned, in his last 18.1 innings over three starts.

The game was scoreless until the fourth. Gleyber Torres began the innings by banging a base hit to right. Two batters later, Ian Rice doubled him in to make it 1-0 Myrtle Beach (39-38, 3-4). In his first five games with the Pelicans, Rice is 8-for-20 with four doubles and one home run.

That was the lone blemish for Salem (47-28, 4-2) starter Travis Lakins (5-3). The Ohio State product yielded that lone run on six hits in 5.2 frames, whiffing two without walking a batter.

Martinez exited in the seventh for Wagner, who tossed two perfect innings out of the bullpen.

With the score still 1-0 in the ninth, Joseph Monge led off with a base hit. After a failed bunt attempt resulted in a popout, Monge stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. McNeil was able to fan Mike Meyers before issuing back-to-back walks to Nick Longhi and Rafael Devers to load the bases. However, the right-hander retired Jose Sermo on a popout to short to end the ballgame and pick up his ninth save.

McNeil has gone 11 appearances in a row since May 24 without allowing a run. The shutout was Myrtle Beach's eighth blanking of the year, matching the most of any team in the Carolina League.

The Pelicans return home Thursday to begin a four-game series with the Potomac Nationals at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. RHP Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.89 ERA) toes the rubber for the 7:05 p.m. game, with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app, TuneIn and MiLB.tv. Thursday's contest is a Thirsty Thursday, meaning $1.00 12 oz. Bud and Bud Light draughts and $2.00 16 oz. cans from 6-8 p.m. An East Coast Pyrotechnics Extravaganza follows the game.

The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
