Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, Md. - A three-run, walk-off home run from Conor Bierfeldt in the 10th inning lifted the Keys to a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. With the win, Frederick completed the three-game sweep of the Carolina Mudcats. It was the Keys first sweep since May 26, when they completed a three game brooming of the Winston-Salem Dash. The Keys also moved to four games above .500 for the first time this season.
After the Mudcats tied the game in the sixth, Carolina and Frederick played three innings of scoreless ball. In the tenth, Wynston Sawyer reached on a single and then Cam Kneeland got on base via a throwing error by Carolina third baseman Jordan Edgerton. That sent up Bierfeldt who crushed Sean McLaughlin's 0-1 offering over the leftfield wall.
Ahead 3-0 after five innings, the orange and black saw the Mudcats level the game in the sixth. Entering for Cory Jones, Trevor Belicek loaded the bases with no outs. Keith Curcio then hit a single to the right field wall, scoring one run. The next batter, Tanner Murphy, hit a sacrifice to left field prompting a pitching change. Left-hander Garrett Cleavinger struck out the first batter he saw, before allowing an RBI single to Edgerton to tie the contest at three.
The Keys kicked off the scoring in the second. DJ Stewart walked with two outs stole second and later scored on an RBI single by Jomar Reyes. One stanza later, Frederick added two more. Back-to-back singles by Jay Gonzalez and Erick Salcedo set the table for Sawyer, who singled home Gonzalez, while an error by Braxton Davidson in right allowed Salcedo to come around from first.
Right-hander Tanner Chleborad (3-2) earned the win, pitching one inning, allowing one walk in a scoreless frame. Cleavinger shined in relief, striking out eight batters in 3.2 innings. He allowed one hit and one walk.
Caleb Joseph caught for the third straight game, and was behind the plate for the first six innings. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. He threw out the only runner trying to steal against him.
Mudcats right-hander Taylor Lewis (0-1) was tagged for the loss. He allowed three hits and two runs, both unearned, in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Keys welcome the Salem Red Sox to town on Thursday night. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (3-8, 5.07) starts for the Keys against Sox southpaw Daniel McGrath (2-3, 4.75) First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
