Carolina Mudcats News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Frederick's Conor Bierfeldt hit a three-run walk-off home run off Carolina's Sean McLaughlin in the tenth inning while leading the Keys to a 6-3, sweep clinching win on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field in Frederick.
McLaughlin (0.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 HR) entered the game with two outs in the tenth in place of reliever Taylor Lewis and allowed both inherited runners to score on Bierfeldt's home run. Bierfeldt was 1-for-5 on Wednesday night and finished the series with a home run in each of the three games played.
Lewis (0-1, 0.00) suffered the loss despite pitching through a season high three and 2/3 innings (3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R , 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) and allowing just the two unearned runs. A throwing error by Jordan Edgerton with one man on and two outs in the tenth allowed the inning to continue before Bierfeldt's game winning homer.
The Mudcats originally came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth inning and did so against Frederick relievers Trevor Belicek and Garrett Cleavinger.
Omar Obregon started the sixth inning rally with a double against Belicek and Davidson kept it going by being hit by a pitch. A single to right by Sal Giardina then loaded the bases for Keith Curcio who came through with a RBI single off the wall in right. Tanner Murphy then drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and the Mudcats managed to cut the lead to 3-2. Cleavinger was then brought in and struck out one before giving up a game tying single to Edgerton.
Cleavinger stayed in the game after allowing the game-tying run in and would go on to strikeout eight over three and 2/3 innings pitched. He was charged with the blown save, but did not allow another run to score while keeping the game tied at 3-3 through the ninth. Tanner Chleborad (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB) later pitched a scoreless tenth and earned the win.
Cory Jones started for the Keys and kept the Mudcats without a run over five innings pitched. Jones did not earn a decision and finished with two walks and five strikeouts in his start.
Matt Withrow started for Carolina and pitched through his fourth quality stat of the season after holding the Keys to three runs (two earned) and six hits over six innings pitched. Withrow also walked three and struck out six before leaving after the sixth.
Withrow retired the first five he faced in consecutive order to start the game before walking D.J. Stewart and allowing a two-out RBI single to Jomar Reyes in the second. The Keys then rallied for two runs with help of three hits and an error by Braxton Davidson in the second to go up 3-0.
The loss dropped the Mudcats to 2-5 in their second half opening, seven game road trip. It also clinched a series sweep for the Keys, marking the third time this season that the Mudcats were swept in a series.
Carolina's next home game is on Thursday, June 30 against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Thursday's game is Thirsty Thursday and the first annual Emerging Women NC Day at the Ballpark.
