Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Ten. - The Biscuits (47-40) continued their unmatched success away from home, taking down the first-place Tennessee Smokies (47-40) in the series opener, 7-1, on Sunday night at Smokies Stadium. Montgomery is now 28-14 on the road this season, and just a game behind Tennessee in the Second Half North Division standings.
J.D. Martin (6-9), who was coming off of a stellar relief appearance on Tuesday at Jacksonville, made his 17th start of the season one of his better ones, hurling six innings of one-run ball to improve to 6-2 on the road this year. Yasiel Balaguert's RBI-double in the first inning proved to be the knuckleballer's only mistake, which put Tennessee up 1-0.
Nathan Lukes responded with a sac fly to tie the game in the second, and a throwing error by Smokies shortstop Zack Short brought home the only other run the Biscuits would need in the third.
Lukes was back at it in the fourth, however, powering his third home run of the season over the right field wall against Smokies starter Duncan Robinson (5-2). Nate Lowe stroked a three-run bomb of his own in the fifth inning, and now has 27 RBIs through his first 27 Double-A games. Four of Lowe's seven home runs this season have now come at Smokies Stadium.
In the seventh, Peter Maris notched his third hit of the game on a solo homer to right, to give the third baseman five on the season, three of which have come in Kodak. Mike Broadway looked sharp in two perfect innings out of the bullpen for Montgomery, and Roel Ramirez worked a scoreless ninth.
The Biscuits will try to pull even with the first-place Smokies with a win on Monday when RHP Brandon Lawson (2-0) opens against RHP Matt Swarmer (0-1) at 6:00 PM CT.
Once the Biscuits conclude their current nine-game road trip, the team will return to Riverwalk Stadium to open up a five-game series with the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday, July 18 when there will be a Bucket Hat Giveaway. The series will also include Outdoors Night featuring a Hunter Camo T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, July 19, First Responders Night & MAX Fireworks on Friday, July 20, Millennial Night featuring a Participation Ribbon Giveaway & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 21, and then a Mascot Poster Giveaway on Sunday, July 22.
