Mississippi Braves News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Tyler Neslony hit his first home run of the 2018 season in the first inning on Sunday at Regions Field, and that is all the Bryse Wilson (W, 2-5) and the Mississippi Braves needed in a 1-0 win over the Birmingham Barons. The series opening-win is the fourth victory in five games for the Braves.
Neslony stepped to the plate in the top of the first inning with one out and lifted an Alec Hansen (L, 0-4) fastball 415 feet down the right field line to put the M-Braves (8-9, 37-40) up right away 1-0. The homer was Neslony's second at the Double-A level and first since Aug. 22, 2017, at Chattanooga. The homer came in his 81st game and 289th at-bat.
That was was all the offense that Wilson needed as the 20-year-old right-hander turned in his second straight shutout performance. Wilson gave up just four hits and walked none over 6.1 innings of shutout baseball. He threw 101 pitches in the outing. Atlanta's fourth-round selection in 2016 out of Hillsborough, NC has posted 13.1 scoreless innings on nine hits over his last two starts with 16 strikeouts and just one walk.
The quality start was the 17th in the last 25 games for the M-Braves, with a 2.13 ERA over those starts since June 10.
Kelvin Vasquez took over for Wilson in the seventh inning and tossed 1.2 scoreless to earn his fourth hold. Chad Sobotka (S, 3) earned his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Birmingham (9-8, 41-44) did not have a runner reach second base until the sixth inning. The win for the M-Braves pulls them to just a game under .500 in the second-half at 8-9.
The M-Braves and Barons will play game two of the four-game series on Monday night at Regions Field. LHP Ricardo Sanchez (1-2. 5.40) starts for the M-Braves against Birmingham RHP Jimmy Lambert (1-1, 7.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with coverage beginning at 6:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio app.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos beginning on Thursday. For tickets and more information on the Braves, fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
