Smokies Drop Series Opener to Biscuits

Sevierville, TN - The Tennessee Smokies dropped a 7-1 contest in the first game of the series against the Montgomery Biscuits at Smokies Stadium on Sunday. For Tennessee, the loss broke a three-game winning streak.

Tennessee jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Charcer Burks hit a leadoff single and Yasiel Balaguert doubled home Burks with two outs to make it 1-0 Smokies. Montgomery would respond with a sacrifice fly in the second and another run on a throwing error in the third to give the Biscuits a 2-1 advantage. A solo home run in the top of the fourth increased the lead to 3-1. Montgomery added three more runs in the fifth inning on a three-run home run, making it a 6-1 game. The score remained 6-1 until a Montgomery solo shot in the top of the seventh inning made it 7-1.

Duncan Robinson started on the mound for the Smokies. Robinson pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk. He also struck out two before handing the ball to Preston Morrison, who threw 3.0 innings. Morrison gave up one run on one hit, while striking out one and walking nobody. Scott Effross pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Tennessee.

Tennessee and Montgomery will meet for the second game of the series on Monday at 7:00 p.m. Matt Swarmer (0-1, 4.74 ERA) is expected to start for the Smokies. Swarmer is holding right handed batters to a .119 average this season.

Kris Bryant, the Cubs third baseman and former Smokies player, is expected to make a rehab appearance with Tennessee on Monday. Bryant is expected to be joined by Chicago pitchers Brian Duensing and Eddie Butler, who will also be making rehab appearances.
