Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
LANSING, Mich. -- Center field Jakob Marsee homered and stole three bases on Thursday night, but the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland A's affiliate) came from behind to beat the TinCaps, 7-4, at Jackson Field. That snapped Fort Wayne's two-game winning streak to begin the series.
For the second time in three nights, Marsee led the game off for the TinCaps (22-17, 54-51) with a home run to right field. He's up to 11 on the season.
However, the Lugnuts (15-24, 46-58) equalized with a run in the second.
Catcher Ethan Salas (No. 1 Padres prospect) put the 'Caps back ahead in the third with a two-out RBI single. It was the 17-year-old's first RBI at the High-A level after debuting yesterday.
Lansing, though, put up five runs in the home third, highlighted by an Euribiel Angeles grand slam that broke a 2-2 tie.
The TinCaps responded with a pair of runs in the fourth, as first baseman Nathan Martorella (No. 10 Padres prospect) ripped an RBI double off the wall in right field. Later in the ninth, he doubled off the wall in left field. He's tied for the Midwest League lead in RBIs (70). Third baseman Lucas Dunn followed Martorella with a sacrifice fly that made it 6-4.
The Lugnuts added to their lead with a two-out RBI single from catcher Daniel Susac (No. 7 A's prospect) in the sixth.
Fort Wayne put the leadoff man on in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, but couldn't draw any closer. Marsee (No. 12 Padres prospect), who was hit by a pitch in the eighth, stole second and third base. Earlier in the third, he walked and stole second before Salas' hit. For the year, Marsee leads the league in on-base percentage (.407) and is tied for second in stolen bases (40). He's one of just eight players across Minor League Baseball with at least 10 homers and 40 stolen bases.
Despite the outcome, the TinCaps continue to lead the East Division second-half standings by a half-game over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate).
Next Game: Friday, Aug. 10 @ Lansing (7:05 p.m.)
TinCaps Probable Starter: LHP Austin Krob (No. 28 Padres prospect)
Lugnuts Probable Starter: LHP Brady Basso
