Marlins Sink Tobs 5-3

MOREHEAD CITY N.C. (July 6, 2011)- Chase McDonald's three run homer in the fifth inning was the dagger as the Wilson Tobs fell to the Morehead City Marlins 5-3. The Tobs are now on a four game losing streak and (1-4) in the 2nd half and (16-17) overall.

Wilson scored first in the top of the third inning. Jeff Kremer lead off the inning with a double and then Brian Holberton singled Kremer to third base. When Angelo LaBruna was at the plate, a throwing error occurred on an attempted pickoff by Marlins pitcher Dario Santangelo. Kremer scored. Labruna went on to ground out to second base therefore the run was earned. The Tobs had the 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last for long as in the bottom of the third inning the Marlins answered. Morehead City got a lead off single followed by a double, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Chase McDonald hit a sacrifice fly ball out to left field, which scored the tying run. The score after three full innings was deadlocked at 1.

McDonald was not finished on the evening. After there were two runners on base, McDonald hit a 0-1 fastball into the trees beyond the left field wall. The three run homer put the Marlins on top 4-1 after five innings in the books.

The Marlins added a run in the bottom of the seventh. After a single and a throwing error by Tobs reliever Lance Honeycutt there was a runner on 2nd base with only one out. A fly out to center advanced the runner to third. A two out single by Danny Diekroeger plated the run making the score 5-1 Morehead City.

Wilson made it interesting in the top half of the ninth inning. Jeff Bouton led off with a walk and then back-to-back singles by Tony Wieber and Kremer scored Bouton. That made the score 5-2. Brian Holberton was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with 0 outs. Angelo LaBruna hit into the 4-6-3 double play to kill the rally, and kill the Tobs chances of a comeback. Tony Wieber scored making it 5-3 in favor of the Marlins. 5-3 was the final score.

The winning pitcher was Dario Santangelo who improves to (3-3) overall. Santangelo gave up just four hits while walking only two and striking out seven. Santangelo only gave up one run on the game. The losing pitcher was Craig Goodman who saw his record fall to (2-1). Goodman gave up four runs, three earned on seven base hits. Goodman did not record a walk, and struck out two hitters. Goodman also hit one batter. 1082 fans watched the game at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, The Marlins improved to 3-2 on the 2nd half and (17-16) overall on the 2011 campaign.

The Wilson Tobs will return home on July 7th to take on the Kernersville Bulldogs starting at 7:05pm. The Bulldogs play in the CVCL (Carolina Virginia Collegiate League) and will be the 2nd exhibition opponent for the Tobs this season. The Tobs will be having another Thirsty Thursday promotion where 16-ounce draft beers in the beer garden will be just $1.50. The Tobs will be sending RHP Garrett Davis (UNC) to the hill. This will be Davis' first start this season. The Bulldogs will counter with LHP Tyler Jackson (Appalachian State).
