Forest City Owls News Release
THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The Forest City Owls defeated the Thomasville Hi-Toms, 7-6, on Wednesday night at Historic Finch Field. The Owls improve to 2-1 in the second half and 18-12 overall, while the Hi-Toms lost their first game of the second half and are now 18-15 overall. First pitch was delayed 50 minutes due to inclement weather.
D.J. Thomas (N.C. State) took the mound for Forest City. Thomas worked six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, striking out nine hitters and walking three. Thomas came away with his second win of the season. Adam Izokovic (Gardner-Webb) picked up his seventh save of the season.
Conner Scarborough (Gardner-Webb) got the starting nod for the Hi-Toms. Scarborough also threw six innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, recording five strikeouts and three walks, and taking his third loss of the season.
The Owls wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard. CF Buddy Sosnoskie (Francis Marion) blasted the third pitch of the game over the left field wall for a leadoff solo home run. Forest City led 1-0 until the Hi-Toms started swinging their bats in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, 1B Zack Briggs (Appalachian State) crushed a double off the hand-operated scoreboard in left-center field. Jacob Fisher (SE Louisiana) and Alex Williams (Louisiana Tech) scored and gave the Hi-Toms a 2-1 lead.
Thomasville put another run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Fisher cracked a solo home run to lead off the frame, boosting the Hi-Toms lead to 3-1 through three frames. The Owls returned fire in the top of the fourth inning, when Jordan Betts hit a grand slam over the left-center wall to jettison Forest City ahead 5-3.
Owls 1B Dusty Quattlebaum (Gardner-Webb) went deep over the center field fence with a solo homer in the top of the fifth, bringing the Owls lead to 6-3. Thomasville's Stephen Carmon responded with a two-run jack in the bottom of the sixth inning, cutting Forest City's lead to 6-5.
The Owls would add another run on a Danny Canela (N.C. State) single in the top of the seventh inning, inviting a response from Thomasville DH Alex Williams (Louisiana Tech) in the bottom of the frame. Williams unleashed a solo home run over the right field fence to make it 7-6 Owls heading into the eighth inning.
Owls manager Matt Hayes was ejected in the top of the third inning after arguing a controversial call at first base that retired the Forest City side. The six home runs hit by both teams marks the most homers hit in a CPL game this season.
Quattlebaum reached base four times this evening, hitting a home run and drawing three walks. The Owls first baseman also scored two runs and had an RBI. Sosnoskie, Canela and Betts each had two hits. Betts' four RBIs all came on his grand slam in the fourth inning. Koontz went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Carmon went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.
The Owls return to Forest City tomorrow night for a doubleheader date with the Asheboro Copperheads. The first game of the evening's twin bill is scheduled for 6:00 PM, while the second game will begin 35 minutes following the conclusion of Game 1.
