Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins pulled out a 5-3 victory over the visiting Wilson Tobs at Big Rock Stadium on Wednesday night, advancing to records of above .500 for the entire summer (17-16) and the second half of the Coastal Plain League season (3-2).
Rather than tuxedo tees for Intimate Bridal and Formal Wear's "Formal Wear Night" at the ballpark, perhaps it would have been more fitting for the Marlins to don purple and gold during Wednesday evening's contest. Three of Morehead City's biggest contributors attend East Carolina University and play for the Pirates.
Starting pitcher Dario Santangelo (3-3) earned his third victory of the season, matching a season-high of seven innings pitched and striking out seven. Santangelo surrendered just one run on four hits and walked just one Wilson batter.
Slugger Chase McDonald belted his sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning and drove in four of the five Marlins runs. He finished the night 2-for-2 at the plate, also including two sacrifice flies and a single. Morehead City third baseman Corey Thompson also had a solid night at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Lefthander from Appalachian State Ryne Frankoff threw one near-perfect inning to close it out in the ninth and record his second save of the season.
The Marlins travel to Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington to take on the Sharks on Thursday, returning to Big Rock Stadium on Friday to again face the Fayetteville SwampDogs. It will be another Facebook Friday, as well as Scout Night at the stadium. The set start time for the South division contest is 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at 6 o'clock.
