Portland Winterhawks News Release
Gothenburg, Sweden - Marek Alscher's coming back from the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship with a little extra cargo after earning the bronze medal with Team Czechia on Friday. The Portland Winterhawks' defenseman skated in every game for the Czechs and was named one of the team's top players of the tournament.
Trailing 5-2 late in the second period at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Czechs posted six unanswered goals to win 8-5 and stun Team Finland in the third-place contest. Alscher posted a +2 rating in 18:38 of ice time in the game.
In total, Czechia went 4-2-1 with wins over Norway and Switzerland in round-robin play, plus a statement quarterfinal win over Canada and Friday's dramatic comeback against the Finns.
Excelling in a shutdown role throughout the tournament, Alscher earned one of three "Top Player" awards for his team as determined by Czechia's hockey federation. The Florida Panthers prospect skated on the top defensive pair in each game, consistently quieting opponents' highest-scoring skaters and guiding his team to a second consecutive medal finish from the blue line.
