Hyland Named Compass Credit Union Player of Month for December
January 5, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
December started on a high note for Brett Hyland with an offensive outburst against the Regina Pats, and it ended the same way. Hyland had plenty of points and memorable moments in between those two games as well.
With an impressive eight goals and 14 points in 9 games, Hyland was named the Player of the Month for December presented by Compass Credit Union. Hyland led the team in goals and points during the month and was a huge part of the team's success in the final month of 2023.
"Brett was just Brett," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "He works extremely hard and gets into the dirty areas. He's one of those guys that when he gets going he creates some momentum for himself. Hopefully he can pick up where he left off on this homestand."
December could hardly have started better for both Hyland and the Wheat Kings. They laid a 7-1 thumping on the Regina Pats on Wheat City Walleye night, with Hyland supplying a hat trick. Not only did that kick off an exemplary December for the 20-year-old forward, but he scored a shorthanded goal that was part of a three-goal outburst shorthanded. That pattern of scoring when down a man would continue all through the month, as the Wheat Kings put up seven shorthanded tallies in December.
Hyland wasn't done scoring there, however. He picked up a goal and an assist in each of his next two games, crucial wins over the Red Deer Rebels and Moose Jaw Warriors respectively. He had a seven-game point streak snapped against the Saskatoon Blades on December 29, but got right back to his scoring ways with a goal and two assists against the Pats on December 30.
By the end of the month, Hyland had taken sole possession of the team's goalscoring lead with 19, despite playing most of the month without his usual linemate Nate Danielson, who was away with Team Canada at the World Juniors. He had also helped steer the club to a record of 8-1 in the month and propel them up the Eastern Conference standings.
Next up for Hyland and the Wheat Kings is a return to a homestand, starting with a game against the Vancouver Giants on Saturday, January 6.
