Marcus Walden Promoted to Toronto for MLB Debut

TRENTON, N.J. - Former Fisher Cats pitcher Marcus Walden is set to become the 69th former Fisher Cat to make his major league debut. The relief pitcher, who began the season with Triple-A Buffalo, had his contract purchased by the Blue Jays today, meaning he will join the club in Toronto for the second home game of the 2014 season. Walden's contract was purchased by the Blue Jays after relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress was designated for assignment following the Jays' home opener on Friday.

Walden spent the entire 2013 season with the Fisher Cats, making 26 starts on the year. He compiled a 6-14 record, but had a solid 3.71 ERA in his lone Double-A season. A true workhorse, Walden averaged better than 6.0 innings per outing, and was the leader in the Eastern League with 162.1 innings pitched. In June, he becasme the first Fisher Cat in nearly three seasons to throw a nine-inning complete-game shutout when he blanked the Harrisburg Senators.

Walden was assigned to the Buffalo bullpen at the time of his call-up. He pitched one scoreless inning in his Triple-A debut on Thursday night. In his career, Walden is 32-32 with a 3.65 ERA in 112 minor league games, including 90 starts.

When he debuts for the Blue Jay, he will be the 69th Fisher Cat to make his MLB debut. Five former Fisher Cats debuted in 2014, including Blue Jays starting second baseman Ryan Goins.

The Fisher Cats continue their season this evening in Trenton, N.J., with the third game in a four-game series against the Trenton Thunder. Right-handed pitcher Austin Bibens-Dirkx will start against Trenton RHP Zach Nuding.
