Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets used a four-run fifth inning to take the opener of a doubleheader against the Akron RubberDucks, 6-3, but fell in the nightcap by a 3-0 score on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
Game One, B-Mets 6, RubberDucks 3
Binghamton took advantage of strong winds to grab the lead in the first as Matt Clark's fly ball to right field turned into an adventure for Jordan Smith. The outfielder misplayed the drive, allowing Kyle Johnson to score from the first base with the game's initial run. The B-Mets doubled the lead on a two-out RBI single from Wilfredo Tovar in the second against Akron starter Joe Colon.
The RubberDucks got to B-Mets starter Rainy Lara in the third with a game-tying two-run homer from Francisco Lindor in the third. Lara shook off the drive and bounced back with two scoreless innings.
With the game tied at two, Colon pitched himself into trouble in the fifth. Following Kyle Johnson's single to left, Kevin Plawecki and Matt Clark each worked out two-out walks to load the bases. Reliever Tyler Sturdevant, pitching for the first time since 2012, took over and induced Jayce Boyd to hit a fly ball to right field. Battling the winds, Smith misplayed the drive into a two-run double. Dustin Lawley followed by shooting a two-run single up the middle.
Owning a four-run lead, Lara returned for the sixth and surrendered back-to-back singles to start the frame. He coaxed a fly out from Jake Lowery before giving way to Adam Kolarek. The southpaw gave up a run-producing fielder's choice before fanning Bryson Myles to end the inning. Chasen Bradford took over in the seventh and worked around a leadoff double to post a scoreless frame, securing his first save of the season.
Lara (1-0) earned the win in his Double-A debut. The Dominican Republic native sprinkled eight hits throughout his 5-1/3 innings. He allowed three runs, struck out three and walked one. Colon (0-1) surrendered five runs on five hits over 4-2/3 innings in the losing effort.
Game Two - RubberDucks 3, B-Mets 0
In game two, Akron got to Binghamton starter Tyler Pill out of the gate. The righty escaped a jam in the first, but was tagged for a run on three hits in the second. He gave up a leadoff triple to Bryson Myles. Tyler Holt brought him home with the game's first run with a single to center. Akron got on the board again in the third inning. Pill surrendered a lead-off home run to Joe Wendle to increase the Binghamton deficit to 2-0.
The RubberDucks plated another run in the fourth inning. Jerrud Sabourin walked with one out and moved to second base on a ground out. The next batter, Tyler Naquin, singled to bring Sabourin home and make the score 3-0
Pill (0-1) exited after four innings in the losing effort. He was tagged for three runs on six hits and failed to strike out any RubberDucks. John Church and Jon Velasquez combined to hold Akron hitless over the last three frames. Murata (1-0) tossed five shutout innings to collect his first victory. Enosil Tejeda worked around a two-out double and struck out three to post a shutout ninth and earn his first save.
The B-Mets (1-2) conclude their four-game series against the Akron RubberDucks Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Hansel Robles makes his Double-A debut against RHP Will Roberts. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame show begins at 12:50 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton split five doubleheaders in 2013...Kyle Johnson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in his Double-A debut...each B-Met catcher Kevin Plawecki and Xorge Carrillo, threw out a base runner
