New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats were defeated by the Richmond Flying Squirrels by the score of 13-3 on Saturday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.
For the third time in as many games, visiting Richmond took the lead in the opening inning. Leadoff hitter Tyler Graham, who singled out to center, took advantage of an SS Aderling Mejia throwing error to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Richmond's offense would really start to heat up a few innings later, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third, largely in part to a three-run home run by DH Jarrett Parker. Three consecutive hits to start the inning, including a wild pitch to SS Matt Duffy that allowed 2B Skyler Stromsmoe to score, ignited the rally and it was capped by Parker's long fly off of Rock Cats starter LHP Taylor Rogers. The designated hitter swung on the first offering by Rogers and immediately put the visitors up by five.
The onslaught would continue in the fourth as Richmond hung three more runs on Rogers. Duffy cracked a double out to left-center to bring home RF Brett Krill and Stromsmoe. A leadoff home run by 1B Angel Villalona in the fifth would be the final batter in Rogers' Double-A debut. He went four innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned, while striking out three and walking none.
The Rock Cats would not be shutout however as DH Nate Hanson laced a double past the shortstop and allowed CF Corey Wimberly, who singled to start the fourth, to cross the plate for the first time.
With the score 12-1 in the bottom of the sixth, New Britain continued to chip away at the lead. Hanson lifted a sacrifice fly out to centerfield against reliever Derek Law to score Mejia who walked to start the inning. 3B Brandon Waring singled up the middle two batters later and Wimberly scored his second run of the day.
Richmond starter Adalberto Mejia went five innings in his Eastern League debut, allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out five.
New Britain and Richmond will wrap up their four-game series with a Sunday afternoon game at 1:35 p.m. The Rock Cats will start RHP Matt Summers and the Flying Squirrels will send RHP Kyle Crick to the hill.
