Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BROOKLYN, NY -For the second night in a row, offense was at a premium at MCU Park, as the Aberdeen IronBirds and Cyclones locked up in a pitcher's duel, this time with Brooklyn coming out on top 1-0.
The IronBirds had a few chances in the early going as Brooklyn starter Erik Manoah (5-1) struggled with his control at the onset, but quickly righted the ship. The righthander was able to work around a pair of base runners in both the second and third innings but settled down after that and went on to have a career-night on the mound. The righthander tossed 7.0 shutout frames, a career-high, and tied his personal best with nine strikeouts on the evening while scattering four hits and a pair of walks.
With Manoah dealing on the mound, the Cyclones mounted just enough offense to push across a run in the bottom of the fourth, snapping their scoreless streak at 17.0 innings. OF Jacob Zanon singled to start the frame and quickly stole second base, his league leading 18th steal of the season, and advanced to third on that same pitch as a breaking ball from Aberdeen starter Alex Wells eluded the Aberdeen catcher for a wild pitch. With Zanon on third and nobody out, Nick Sergakis struck out and Colby Woodmansee popped out to shallow right field. But Pete Alonso came through with a frozen rope down the left field line, leaving his bat with an exit velocity of 113 MPH, to plate Zanon and give Brooklyn the 1-0 advantage.
That would be all the offense Brooklyn would need. LHP Taylor Henryworked around a leadoff single in the eighth and RHP Joe Zanghi tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to collect his third save of the season.
Brooklyn and Aberdeen will have a quick turnaround as they will square off in the rubber match of a three-game series on Tuesday morning at 11:30 AM. Tickets start at just $10 and are available now by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
