Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
BATAVIA, NY - A throwing error and lack of a big hit did the Renegades in Tuesday night as they lost the series finale to Batavia 2-1 at Dwyer Stadium. Even with the loss, Hudson Valley took two of three from the Muckdogs.
Hudson Valley got the ball rolling in the third as leftfielder Landon Cray belted his first homer of the season, a solo shot over the rightfield wall to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
After the Renegades failed to score in fourth, despite putting runners on second and third with two out, the Muckdogs scored in the game in the bottom-half when designated hitter Brenden Berry sent his first homer of the season to center. It was a solo-shot to tie the game at one.
Earlier in the game, in the second, Berry was at third with only one out when second baseman grounded into a fielder's choice to third. Berry was caught in a rundown, tagged out, and the threat was over.
Hudson Valley again got runners to second and third in the fifth with two out, however first baseman Nate Lowe grounded to short to end that threat.
The Muckdogs would break the tie in their half of the fifth. Jarett Rindfleisch started the inning with a single to left. Following a fly out and ground out, Rindfleisch stood at second with two out when centerfielder Corey Bird singled to shortstop Joseph Astacio who tried to make a desperate throw to first to retire Bird. However, the throw was wide of first, went down the rightfield line, and Rindfleisch scored from second to give Batavia a 2-1 lead. Astacio was credited with a throwing error on the play making the run unearned.
The Renegades tried to score in the sixth, but great defense kept the Muckdogs in front. Catcher Danny De La Calle led off with a single, then went to second on a wild pitch with no one out. Following a fly out and strikeout, Cray singled into left and De La Calle tried to score from second. However, leftfielder Walker Olis came up firing and gunned down De La Calle at the plate to preserve the Muckdogs' lead.
Hudson Valley would put one more rally together in the ninth. With two out and the bases empty, Cray and Astacio singled to put runners at first and second. However, closer Parker Bugg got centerfielder Jake Fraley to fly out to center to end the game.
Getting the win for Batavia was reliever Chad Smith (1-0) who pitched two scoreless innings. Bugg went two innings to notch his third save of the season.
The loss went to Hudson Valley starter Adrian Navas (2-2). After allowing only one run in the month of July, Navas gave up two runs, only one earned, on five hits in five innings of work. He also struck out six.
Offensively, the Renegades were led by Cray and Haley. Cray went 3-4 with the solo homer and two singles, while Haley chipped in with two singles himself. For the game, Hudson Valley had eight hits. Batavia had seven hits including a 2-3 performance from Berry who homered, doubled and scored a run.
Hudson Valley heads home to begin a six-game homestand against the Brooklyn Cyclones beginning Wednesday at 7:05. Right-hander Eduard Rosillo will start for the Renegades (1-0, 0.90 ERA) against righty Harol Gonzalez (2-1, 2.02 ERA) of the Cyclones. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
