Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers (24-20) beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-1 to claim the series win and move their record to 6-3 head-to-head against Vermont.
After clubbing out eight extra base hits yesterday the Tigers picked up where they left off in the second inning. Austin Athmann and Daniel Pinero hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning and put the Tigers up early 1-0. Tanner Donnels followed suit with a two-run shot out to right field that carried 362 feet. The home run was the first of the season for Donnels and made it 3-0 Connecticut.
In the third inning, Cole Bauml homered to right field to extend the lead to 4-0. It was the second home run in as many days for Bauml and the Tigers after not having a multi-HR game in their first 42 games this season, the Tigers had multi-homer efforts the past two days.
On the mound, Locke St. John pitched a season-high seven innings and is the first Tigers pitcher to work past the sixth this season. St. John allowed just one run, a solo shot to Luke Persico in the fifth inning. The run ended a streak of 10 consecutive scoreless innings against the Lake Monsters. In the seventh, St. John got into a jam, with runners at the corners and one out, St. John induced a pop up from James Terrell. The catch was made in foul ground by Tanner Donnels and he threw out Luke Persico at the dish, trying to score from third on the tag. The game remained 4-1 CT after 7.
In the eighth inning, Tanner Donnels hit a hard line drive out to centerfield that James Terrell misplayed and sailed over his head. Donnels ended up at third base with a triple, while two runs came in to score, giving Connecticut a 6-1 lead.
Joey Havrilak capped an impressive day at the plate with a solo shot in the ninth inning. Havrilak finished the day 4-5 at the plate and the home run was his third homer of the season and first since he homered at Centennial Field back in June.
The Connecticut offense finished the day with three more home runs and grabbed 13 hits in the ballgame
Bryan Garcia and Mark Ecker closed the ballgame out with one inning stints out of the bullpen.
The Tigers now head home for their longest home stand of the season, six games. They begin tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Batavia Muckdogs, affiliate of the Miami Marlins.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid-June through early September. 2016 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
