State College Sweeps West Virginia in Three-Game Set

Game 1 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - RF Kevin Krause hit a two-run home run but West Virginia fell to State College 5-3 on Sunday night from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Black Bears' starter RHP James Marvel dropped to 3-5 tossing 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts. State College grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from C Jeremy Martinez. But, just one frame later, a two-run home run over the left field wall from Krause put West Virginia ahead, 2-1. The Black Bears would add another tally in the third on CF Sandy Santos' RBI single giving West Virginia a 3-1 advantage. State College, though, would respond in the bottom of the inning on a three RBI triple from 1B Elier Rodriguez, providing the Spikes with a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Spikes scored an insurance run on an RBI double off the bat of 3B Danny Hudzina, making the score 5-3. Black Bears' DH Will Craig went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games. State College CF Vince Williams went 2-for-4 while reliever RHP Bob Wheatley earned the win throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Spikes' closer RHP Eric Carter logged his fifth save of the year.

Game 2 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Starter RHP Danny Beddes and reliever LHP Cristian Mota kept the Black Bears in the game on the mound but the Spikes defeated West Virginia 2-1 in a pitcher's duel on Monday night from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Beddes fell to 3-2, tossing five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts. State College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on SS Andy Young's RBI double down the left field line. Two innings later, an RBI groundout from CF Vince Jackson increased the Spikes' advantage to 2-0. But, the Black Bears' offense would answer in the top of the sixth as an RBI single from C Kevin Krause cut West Virginia's deficit in half, 2-1. Mota entered in the bottom of the inning for Beddes and hurled the final three innings scoreless. Spikes' starter RHP Jordan Hicks was dominant in his season debut throwing six innings, not allowing an earned run on four hits. Reliever RHP Spencer Trayner tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the year. For West Virginia, Krause paced the offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI. State College LF Anthony Ray had an excellent night at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, scoring two runs as the Spikes outhit the Black Bears, 7-4. In his third rehab start for West Virginia, CF Austin Meadows went 1-for-4 with a single in the first inning.

Game 3 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Black Bears' 2B Kevin Mahala blasted his first professional home run but RF Riley Drongeson's RBI walk-off double in the eleventh inning lifted the State College Spikes over West Virginia 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. West Virginia reliever RHP Scooter Hightower took the loss allowing one earned run over the final 1.1 innings. State College got on the scoreboard in the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from LF Andy Young to provide the Spikes with a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, West Virginia would respond as Mahala launched his first career professional home run to tie the score 1-1. Then,1B Chris Harvey's RBI single gave the Black Bears a 2-1 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, State College DH Jeremy Martinez lined an RBI single to center field to even then score, 2-2. RHP Dylan Prohoroff entered the ballgame on the mound in the sixth for Black Bears' starter LHP Cam Vieaux. The 6th round pick in the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft, Vieaux received a no-decision throwing five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits The Spikes would jump ahead of the Black Bears, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth on C Ryan McCarvel's RBI sacrifice fly. An inning later, Ricardo Bautista's solo home run increased the Black Bears' deficit to 4-2. But, the Black Bears would come back in the eighth. Singles from Mahala and Moore, along with a Spikes' error allowed two runs to score, tying the score, 4-4. In the eleventh inning, the Spikes would win the game as 1B Elier Rodriguez, who led off the inning with a single, came across to score on Drongeson's RBI walk-off double. C Arden Pabst went 3-for-5 to pace West Virginia's offense that out hit State College 12-10. SS Tommy Edman and Rodriguez had two hits each for the Spikes as reliever RHP Jhonatan Escudero earned the win hurling the final two innings scoreless. West Virginia (20-24) will open a six-game home stand tomorrow night against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (18-24) at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Bark in the Park Night.
