
Doubledays Beat Yankees in Extras

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, won their second extra-inning game of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Staten Island Yankees on Monday night. Doubledays outfielder Daniel Johnson knocked in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the tenth inning.
The Yankees (23-19) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Carlos Vidal led off the inning with a walk. Nick Solak then singled to put runners on first and second base. On a Drew Bridges fly out to right field, Vidal tagged up and advanced to third base. Timmy Robinson followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Vidal to give Staten Island a 1-0 lead.
The Doubledays (19-24) tied the game in the top of the second inning. With one out, Tres Barrera doubled. Barrera then advanced to third base on a Ryan Ripken ground out to second. Paul Panaccione followed with a single to left field that scored Barrera to tie the game at one.
Auburn took the lead in the top of the third. With two outs, Johnson singled. Sheldon Neuse followed with a triple down the right-field line that scored Johnson to give the Doubledays a 2-1 lead. With Nick Banks batting, a wild pitch allowed Neuse to score, extending the Auburn lead to two, 3-1.
Staten Island cut into the Auburn lead in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Solak worked a walk. Bridges then doubled to right field, scoring Solak to cut the Doubledays' lead to one, 3-2.
The Yankees tied the game in the fifth inning. With one out, Solak singled to center field. With Bridges batting, a passed ball allowed Solak to advance to second base. Solak then moved to third base on a wild pitch with Bridges still up to bat. Bridges followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Solak and tie the game at three.
The Doubledays scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the tenth inning. With two outs, Blake Perkins singled to right field. Johnson then doubled down the left-field line. Perkins scored from first base on the play to put the Doubledays up 4-3.
Auburn and Staten Island conclude their three-game series on Tuesday morning. Left-hander Tyler Watson will pitch for the Doubledays, while right-hander Chad Martin will be on the mound for the Yankees. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. from Staten Island.
