Late Rally Propels Scrappers

Niles, OH-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Williamsport Crosscutters continued their nail bitter season series on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. After an eighth inning rally would propel the Scrappers to a 2-1 win, the two teams have now combined to play six straight one run games.

Williamsport would score first again on Tuesday. They would once again take advantage of a Scrappers error to get on the board. With two outs and runners on first and third, Gregori Rivero would steal second. On the throw from Scrappers catcher Jack Goihl, the ball would skip past the bag and into center for a throwing error. The error allowed David Martinelli to score from third for a 1-0 Crosscutters lead.

The Scrappers would answer back with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. With Gabriel Mejia at third base, Todd Isaacs would steal second. On the throw to second, Mejia would take off for the plate. The return throw to the plate was late, allowing Mejia to score to tie the game 1-1.

Mahoning Valley would push across the eventual winning run in the eighth inning. Mejia would reach first base to start the inning on a wild pitch after striking out. An Isaacs' sacrifice bunt would move him to second. Mejia would then move to third on a ground out by Erlin Cerda. With two outs, Mejia would score the game winning run on a throwing error by Crosscutters third baseman Evan Rogers.

The win is the Scrappers first of the season against Williamsport. With three more unearned runs combined, the Scrappers and Crosscutters have not score an earned run against each other since June 24th in Williamsport.

Tanner Tully started and took a no decision in 3.0 innings of work. He allowed one unearned run on four hits. Tully did not walk a batter and struck out four. Ping-Hsueh Chen would follow with 2.0 innings of relief. He allowed just one hit while walking one and striking out five. Ryan Colegate (3-2) earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief. He walked one and struck out two. Michael Letkewicz (1) earned his first professional save in 1.0 inning of work. He allowed one hit and walked one.

The Scrappers (19-24) now hit the road for a six game road trip starting in West Virginia on Wednesday night. First pitch from Morgantown is set for 7:05pm. Juan Hillman will get the start for the Scrappers.
