Manitoba Moose Recap: Manitoba 2 at Iowa 3 SO
October 15, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (1-0-1) and Iowa Wild (1-1-0) met for the second straight game in Des Moines, IA. After taking just two penalties last night, the Moose found themselves in the box with more frequency on Saturday. The penalty kill went to work three times in the first, keeping the Wild powerplay off the board in each instance. Ondrej Pavelec got into his first AHL action since the 2010-11 season and made nine saves to help keep the game scoreless after twenty.
The second period showcased both clubs' special teams. Once the dust settled, the Moose and Wild had combined for 13 powerplays through forty minutes. Despite all the chances, only one powerplay found the twine. Before that happened, Quinton Howden opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal as he broke through a pair of defenders to accept an Andrew Copp feed before sending the puck to the back of the net. Just 1:03 later, at the 5:28 mark, Zack Mitchell tied the game for Iowa by ripping a one-timer past Pavelec. That was all the scoring the period would see with the teams going to the third tied 1-1.
Manitoba regained the lead to start the third as Howden kept his hot stick going. He slipped into some open ice and a convenient rebound found his stick for the goal 4:30 into the period. The lead didn't last long as the Wild powerplay cashed in for the second time. Sam Anas hunted down the loose puck after Pavelec made a pair of stops and deposited it to the back of the net seven minutes through the frame. The 2-2 deadlock held until the end of the third and the teams required extra time to decide the game.
The Moose held a man advantage going into overtime, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Wild had a great opportunity to end the game when Tyler Graovac was awarded a penalty shot, but Ondrej Pavelec came up with the save to keep the game going. The Moose went to a second overtime powerplay when Brian Strait had the stick knocked out of his hand, but Manitoba couldn't put the game away and it rolled into the shootout tied 2-2. Both goaltenders turned away the first three shooters faced. Marko Dano was stopped as the first extra shooter for the Moose and rookie Alex Tuch scored to give Iowa the 3-2 win.
