Gibson Shines in Opening Night Victory

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Christopher Gibson stopped 38 of 39 shots and Bracken Kearns scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period on Saturday as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, defeated the Providence Bruins, 2-1, at Webster Bank Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Kyle Burroughs looked to bring some life to the home team by dropping the gloves with Sean Kuraly just 2:50 into the second period.

Later, with less than three minutes left in the middle frame, Ross Johnston beat goaltender Malcolm Subban glove side to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead. Ryan Pulock created the chance when he crossed the blue line and slid a saucer pass to Johnston in the left circle who buried it with a low shot at the 17:01 mark.

The Sound Tigers' scoring leader from a year ago, Kearns doubled Bridgeport's lead at 10:02 of the third period. Travis St. Denis began the rush when he hustled out of the penalty box to collect the puck in the trapezoid, which negated an icing call. He then passed it to Kearns, who wristed it over Subban's;
