Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Jeff Mandel smoothly handled the Curve starting lineup as he did one week ago, limiting Altoona to one run over six innings, and with the aid of seven stolen bases, the Harrisburg Senators ran over the Curve with a 5-1 series-opening win Tuesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Mandel (1-0) benefitted from some early run support with the Senators plating two runs in the first on RBI singles by Destin Hood and Chris Rahl to seize a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, they matched the feat with Eury Perez and Jeff Kobernus each scoring runs to make it a 4-0 margin. All four early runs went as unearned on the account of Curve starter Mike Colla (0-3) thanks to three Altoona errors in the first three frames.
By the time Colla departed, the right-hander had surrendered five runs, just one earned, on eight hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
Righty Mandel, who blanked the Curve over seven shutout innings on April 17 in an eventual 4-0 Senators win in Harrisburg, was efficient again on this night. The Baylor University product struck out three and walked three and allowed just one run in his final inning of work, the sixth, yielding six total hits. Matt Curry's RBI double plated Adalberto Santos to get the Curve on the board, but Mandel and his bullpen shut the door on Altoona's attempt at a comeback. The Harrisburg starter and three relievers allowed just one more man to reach scoring position after Curry's double. Curry's 3-for-4 night was Altoona's most productive at the plate.
On the Senators side, Perez, Kobernus, and Devin Ivany each posted multi-hit games with Ivany cranking his first homer of the year, a solo shot off Colla in the fourth, and Perez and Kobernus combining for five steals. Hood and Rahl added swiped bags for the Senators who lead the league with 33 steals as a team.
The Curve and Sens hook up for the middle game of this three-game series Wednesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field on a Curve What If Wednesday. This week's theme is Kids Run the Show, and the Curve's youngest fans will be an integral part of game two against the Senators, doing things from taking tickets and working as ushers to hosting on-field competitions and joining the radio broadcast. Wednesday night is also a WALY 4-Pack Wednesday where Curve fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs, and four regular sodas for just $35. Altoona sends left-hander Nathan Baker (2-1, 3.29) to the hill for the middle game to be opposed by fellow southpaw Danny Rosenbaum (2-0, 1.25) with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Airtime on ESPN 1430 and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 6 p.m.
