Mallards, Woodchucks Renew Acquaintances
June 25, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Wausau, WI - June 25, 2012. The Madison Mallards (11-15) travel to Wausau to start a three game series with the Wisconsin Woodchucks (12-13). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
On Sunday the Mallards held on for a 3-2 win over the Eau Claire Express (8-17). Mallards starter Matt LaMothe (Georgia State) was perfect through 6.0 innings before surrendering leadoff double in the seventh inning to Express second baseman Tim Zier (San Diego State). Center fielder Tyler Marincov's (North Florida) fifth home run of the season highlighted the offense, and closer John Hamilton's (UNC-Charlotte) seventh save of the season provided the win.
On the hill for the Mallards tonight is right-hander Trevor Foss (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Foss (1-2) has taken losses in his two previous starts and will be looking to get back in the win column against the Woodchucks. His last start he threw 6.0 innings and struck out eight, giving up three runs on five hits. Through four starts Foss has been a strikeout machine, averaging 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Right-hander Jack Fischer (Wake Forest) will make his third start of the season, and face the Mallards for the second time already. Since making his debut with the Woodchucks against the Mallards in a 4-0 win on June 12th, Fischer (2-0) has burst onto the Northwoods League scene. Through 12.0 innings on the mound he has yet to allow a run, and is coming off a 10 strikeout performance against the Lakeshore Chinooks (12-13).
Getting a decisive edge before the ninth inning has been key for the Mallards, the team has yet to win a game after leading through eight innings or lose a game after trailing through eight innings.
The series features a couple of hot hitting outfielders, both the Mallards Marincov and Woodchucks outfielder Brooks Braga (UW-La Crosse) are on 10 game hitting streaks.
The Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" on Tuesday June 26th to play the second game of their three game series with the Woodchucks. That night will Zombie Night at the ballpark.
The 2012 season is upon us! Single-game tickets are on-sale for all Mallards home games!
The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America.
