Mallards Return Home for South Division Showdown
June 9, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (7-6) and Green Bay Bullfrogs (6-6) on Tuesday will partake in the opener of a two-game South Division series in Madison, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from the confines of Warner Park. Endres Manufacturing presents Dave "The Bullet" Smith, the Human Cannonball, who will perform at the Duck Pond following tonight's game.
This evening will mark the beginning of a four game home-stand for the Mallards, who fell victim to a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Kenosha Kingfish in thirteen innings last night. Matt Bower (Washington State) performed admirably as Madison's starting pitcher in the loss, fanning six batters and conceding just one earned run across six innings of work.
Nate Hoffmann (Middle Tennessee State) will look to give Mallards field manager Donnie Scott a similar performance on Tuesday against Green Bay. The 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher from Sun Prairie, Wis., received a winning decision in his first start of the summer on opening night against Kalamazoo, striking out four batters across five innings of one-run ball. During his junior collegiate campaign this spring, Hoffmann went 4-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 15 appearances (77.1 IP).
To counter, Green Bay will task left-handed pitcher Garrett Harrison (St. Cloud State) with his third start of the season in tonight's series opener. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound southpaw has compiled a 1-1 record and 1.76 ERA during his first two starts of the 2015 Northwoods League season, during which he has struck out 14 and issued four walks. Harrison, originally from Champlin, Minn., went 9-0 on his way to a 2.16 ERA with St. Cloud State this spring.
Kaelin and His K's - Mike Kaelin (Buffalo) tossed 3.1 innings of late bullpen work in Monday's extra-inning loss, logging eight strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed. This season, the power-armed right-hander has tabbed 9.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Mallards, allowing just four hits and one walk. Most impressively, Kaelin has punched out 19 batters, tying him for third-most among all qualified Northwoods League pitchers.
Tuesday's Roster Moves - The Mallards have waived first-baseman/designated hitter Manny Ramirez Jr. (San Francisco), who batted .176 with across 17 at-bats during his stay. Subsequent to the roster move, third baseman Mikey Diekroeger (Stanford) will claim Ramirez Jr.'s spot on Madison's active roster. This spring, Diekroeger batted .315 with an on-base percentage of .426 (108 AB) during his freshman collegiate campaign.
