KALAMAZOO, MI - For the ninth straight time overall and the first time this season at Homer Stryker Field, the Florence Freedom came away victorious with a 7-2 win Friday night over the Kalamazoo Kings.

The Freedom stretched their winning streak to nine thanks in big part to another big top of the ninth inning. For the second consecutive night the Freedom put up four runs in the ninth, this time to pull away from the Kings turning a 3-2 lead into a 7-2 lead.

Billy Mottram finished 3-4 with three RBIs, driving in his final two with the bases loaded in the ninth to make it 5-2 Freedom.

Jordan Towns (3-5) picked up his second straight victory out of the starting rotation. The right-hander went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

The Freedom made things easier for Towns with a run in the first inning. Mottram singled home Ryan Basham after the left-fielder singled and stole second. Florence improved to 30-11 in 2009 when scoring the game's first run.

Dustin Koca broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with his second homer in a Freedom uniform. The solo blast made it 2-1 Freedom.

With the Freedom leading 3-2 in the seventh, the Kings had the tying run at second base with two outs. John Tesseyman entered the game, and after a ground ball which should have gotten him out of the inning, struck out Brandon Anderson to strand runners at the corners.

Demetrius Banks struck out the only man he faced to end the eighth, while former King Ben Shivers recorded the final three outs.

Matt Stiffler went 3-4 for the Freedom including two doubles and two runs scored and Tim Grogan finished 2-4 with a RBI and run scored.

The Freedom's (46-42) win was just the second all season in 10 tries against the Kings and first in Kalamazoo. Game two of the series will be on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Kalamazoo.
