
Rascals win third straight

O'FALLON, MO - The Rascals continued their winning ways against the Grizzlies this season, topping Gateway 11-6 Friday night in front of 2,024 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. River City is now 8-1 against Gateway this year.
River City (49-36) scored in the first five innings en route to 11 runs on 13 hits, all singles. Ernie Banks singled home JoJo Batten in the first for a 1-0 lead against Mark Brackman (5-10). The Rascals made it 4-1 after two frames on RBI singles by Scott Houin and Chad Maddox.
The Rascals sent nine to the plate in the fourth and left with four more tallies. Maddox, Banks and Ryan Wehrle each knocked in a run as the lead ballooned to 9-1.
Gateway (36-51) kept some pressure on the Rascals, scoring two in the seventh on a Joseph Scaperotta two-run home run and an unearned run against Michael Alcorn in the eighth for the 11-6 final score.
Josh Lowey (8-2) won his third straight decision with six innings of three run ball. Lowey struck out five and didn't walk a batter for his second consecutive start.
Brackman tied Gateway's franchise record of ten losses in a season, working the first four frames. The Rascals tallied 11 hits and nine runs (seven earned) against Brackman, who walked four and struck out two.
Every Rascal starter scored at least one run and eight of the nine had a hit. Chris Colton led the way with three hits and two knocked in. Houin, Maddox and Banks each collected two hits with Maddox and Banks driving in a pair.
The Rascals are now only a 1.5 behind Southern Illinois for the division lead and a half game back of Windy City for the fourth and final playoff spot.
River City will take on Gateway tomorrow in a spilt city day/night doubleheader. Game one is at 12:05 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL. Daniel Howard (5-5) will go up against Christian Castorri (2-2). The nightcap is back at T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. Jake Laber (7-4) will take the bump against Paige Dumont (5-4).
