
Grizzlies drop opener

O'FALLON, MO- The River City Rascals scored early and often Friday night, defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 11-6 in the opener of a four-game series at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
River City (49-36) got on the board against Grizzlies starter Mark Brackman with an unearned run in the first to lead 1-0.
Joe Agreste evened the score for the Grizzlies with a solo home run in the top of the second. It was Agreste's fourth homer of the year.
The Rascals went up for good with a three-run second inning against Brackman. They added a run in the third and four more in the fourth to lead 9-1 before the Grizzlies got on the board again.
Brackman (5-10) allowed nine runs on 11 hits in just four innings.
The Grizzlies (36-51) got two more runs in the fifth on four hits. Gateway got RBIs from Agreste and Joseph Scaperotta. Agreste hit a double to center than one-hopped the wall. Scaperotta added an RBI-single. Agreste finished the night 3-5 with two RBIs. Scaperotta added a two-run homer, his 20th, in the seventh. He finished 2-4 with the three RBIs. He now has 55 RBIs to go with 20 home runs.
River City scored a pair of runs against reliever Eric Ridener in the fifth. They were the only runs Ridener allowed in three innings of relief. He struck out seven.
The Grizzlies and Rascals will continue the series with a split-city, day-night double-header Saturday. The two teams will play the first game at GCS Ballpark in Sauget at 12:05 pm. Game two is slated for 7:05 pm back at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
