Mainers Escape Comeback, Defeat Pilgrims
July 1, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
After a heartbreaking loss in Saratoga Springs, New York against the Brigade the night before, the Mainers hit the road to take on the Plymouth Pilgrims in hope that they can pick up a win to even their record back up.
The Piligrims showed resilient effort throughout the whole game, cutting down the Mainers lead slowly, but the Moose pulled out the victory 6-5.
Much like yesterday s game, the Mainers hit the board first when Troy Black and Sam Balzano led off the first inning with back-to-back singles. Cole Martin then moved them up a base on a ground out. Pilgrim s starter Tyler Honahan walked Nic Wilson to load the bases and then Phil Mosey to force in the game s first run.
Mainers starter Scott Heath made his first appearance on the mound this year and worked effectively, retiring the Pilgrims hitters in order through the first two innings. In the third inning they tied it up when Ryan Richardson scored on an RBI single by Andrew Santomauro.
It wasn t long until the Mainers jumped ahead, scoring four times in the next half inning. Anthony Papio scored on a fielder s choice with the bases loaded to take the lead. He was followed by Nate LaPointe, Black, and Balzano all on RBI singles.
They scored one more time in the fifth after the Pilgrims grabbed a run of their own to take the lead 6-2, but the Pilgrims bats weren t finished.
Richardson scored in the fifth off a single to center by Jacob Robson. Three innings later the rain started to come down heavy, but play continued and so did the Pilgrims. Robson stole third, but scored on a throwing error by Martin.
With runners at first and second, Phil Mosey threw a ball in the dirt that Wilson was unable to handle at first, allowing Bobby Melley to score from second.
In the bottom of the ninth the Pilgrims threatened to tie the game, but on a ground ball to third, Black Lacey broke for home and was thrown out when Martin tagged him out after a throw to the plate. Steven Rice who came into the game in relief struck out Melley to end the game.
The Mainers even their record to 8-8 on the year. They will be off tomorrow, but will be back on the road on Tuesday to face the New Bedford Bay Sox. Game time is set for 6:30pm. Conor Krauss is expected to make the start.
