Newport Gulls News Release
Newport, RI - The Newport Gulls will be hosting Strike Out ALS Night to benefit lifelong Middletown resident David Leys and his family at Cardines Field on Friday, July 5th.
Leys, a Newport realtor with three children, Bowen (21), Ryan (20) and Annie (14), was diagnosed with ALS, sometimes known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, last October.
Born and raised on Aquidneck Island just like his father and grandfather before him, David worked for years at his families' department store, Leys Century Store, which had been in his family for over 200 years.
When the Newport Gulls arrived in the "City by the Sea" 13 years ago, David was one of the first to embrace the Gulls, often letting the Gulls players park for free in the Leys Century Store parking lot located right across the street from Cardines Field. David was there to support the Gulls from the start and was one of the team's most loyal advocates early on.
After his families store closed, David got into the real estate, but has always been in business of helping others. Community service runs in the Leys family, and extended to David, who has volunteered with Save The Bay for years and has always worked to raise money for charitable organizations.
David has had a courageous and positive outlook on this disease, living his life enjoying every minute and has always put his children first in his fight with ALS. David's oldest son Bowen, 21 years old, will be entering his senior year at Salve Regina University this fall and played high school baseball at Cardines Field growing up. Ryan, 20 years old, will be entering his first semester at Northeastern in the fall. David's daughter Annie, 14 years old, will be attending Middletown High School in the fall.
All donations collected at Cardines Field on Friday, July 5th will go directly to David Leys and his family. 50/50 raffle proceeds and all donations will be presented to the Leys family in a special ceremony on the field at the conclusion of the game.
