Madden Throws Four Perfect Innings in Erie Loss

Richmond clinched it's ticket to the Eastern League playoffs with a ((())) win over Erie on Thursday.

The combination of Elvis Alvarado and Ty Madden tossed five perfect frames for Erie to begin the game. Madden threw four spotless frames with six strikeouts after Alvarado opened with a perfect first.

Austin Bergner entered for the sixth inning and struggled. His first batter, Victor Bericoto, broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run. After a single, fielding error by Corey Joyce, and a sac bunt, a second run scored on a wild pitch with Will Wilson batting. Wilson made it 3-0 with an RBI single.

In the eighth, Richmond loaded the bases on Jace Jung's fielding error and two singles. Bryce Tassin entered for Bergner and walked Shane Matheny to force in a run. Brady Whalen then drove a three-run double to open up a 7-0 lead for Richmond.

Erie would rally for a run in the eight on Jake Holton's RBI single. After Erie loaded the bases on three walks in the ninth inning, Holton doubled home two more to cut the deficit to 7-3.

John Michael Bertrand (2-3) tossed six scoreless innings and earned the win. Bergner (6-2) took the loss. Tyler Myrick earned his sixth save.

Richmond secured its playoff berth with the win. Erie and Richmond will play each other in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs beginning on Tuesday, September 19, in Richmond.

The series continues on Friday at 6:05 p.m.
