M-Braves Take Game One, Defeat Biscuits 8-4

PEARL, MS -- Barrett Kleinknecht went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Mississippi Braves to an 8-4 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. The series continues with game two Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

Mississippi (30-21, 69-51) scored eight runs on 10 hits while Montgomery (22-29, 57-64) plated four runs on 13 hits. Gustavo Nunez and Braeden Scheluber each drove in two runs. Nunez and Jose Peraza collected two hits apiece. Mobile also won Tuesday but Jacksonville lost, putting the Braves in a tie for second with the Suns trailing the BayBears by one game.

The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. David Rohm doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. He then came in to score on Schlehuber's sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Braves an early advantage.

Kleinknecht launched a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the M-Braves lead to 2-0. It was Kleinknecht's sixth long ball of the season. Rohm reached on an error by the third basemen before coming in to score on Schlehuber's double to left-center. A wild pitch allowed Schlehuber to advance. Peraza followed with a RBI-single, making it 4-0. Kyle Wren then doubled to left, extending the Braves lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cedric Hunter reached on an error by the second baseman. Mycal Jones walked and Kleinknecht singled to load the bases with one out. Nunez then delivered a two-run single to center, giving the Braves a 7-0 lead.

Montgomery made it a 7-3 game in the seventh. Richie Shaffer doubled and Willie Argo walked to start the frame. Jake Hager then doubled to right, scoring Shaffer on the play. Cameron Seitzer then followed with a two-run double to center, making it a four-run game.

Justin O'Conner singled and scored on Kes Carter's double to center, cutting the Braves lead to 7-4 in the eighth.

Kleinknecht and Nunez singled to put runners at the corners with two out in the eighth. A wild pitch allowed Kleinknecht to score, making it an 8-4 game.

Jason Hursh (11-6) tossed six innings for the M-Braves. He gave up eight hits and a walk while fanning four. Mike Colla (7-11) gave up five runs, two earned, on six hits and a homer. He struck out six batters. Ryan Kelly (S, 4) came on to record the final four outs and notch the save.

In game two of this five-game series, Braves right-hander Greg Ross (5-2, 2.39) counters righty Dylan Floro (9-11, 3.82). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
