INF Tyler Smith Promoted to Jackson from High Desert

JACKSON, TENN. - The Seattle Mariners have announced the following roster move that affects the Generals roster. INF Tyler Smith has been promoted to Jackson's roster from Hi-A High Desert. The Mavericks infielder has appeared in 91 games at shortstop this season and 9 games at second base.

Smith, 23, the Mariners' 8th round selection in the 2013 draft out of Oregon State was batting .284 (120x422), with 81 runs scored, 19 doubles, 7 triples, 9 home runs and 44 RBI's in 107 games. Smith also tallied 11 stolen bases and posted a .377 on-base percentage. He has recorded 11 multi-hit games over his last 27 games, batting .333 (33x100) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 15 RBI and 13 walks.

Smith broke onto the scene during big league spring training, batting .571 (8x14) with 9 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run and 6 RBI's, appearing in 13 Cactus League games. Smith's home run came against LA Angels' reliever Fernando Salas and capped off Seattle's 5-3 win over the Angels on March 16th.

The Thousand Oaks, CA native was the 2013 Appalachian League Player of the Year and led all Mariners farmhands with a .320 average, while finishing 3rd in the Appy League in average and 5th in on-base percentage (.394). He recorded a hit in 40 of 52 games, including reaching base safely 46 times.

Smith played three seasons at Oregon State University and earned first team All-Pac 12 honors in 2012 and 2013, leading the Beavers to an appearance in the 2013 College World Series.
